Q: Wait, this isn't real?
A: This is a virtual representation of the miles I walk home from work every day. If I walk three and a half miles home from work, it counts as three and a half miles on a "pretend" walk from Minneapolis to New Orleans, following the Mississippi river.
Q: What's the route?
A: I'm following the river on roads as defined by Google Maps. It's a best guess of a route I would be making up on my walk from day to day. I may take into account availability of lodging, etc. We'll see how that pans out as the days tick by.
Q: Are you really doing this?
A: No. This is just a fun way to see how much walking I do in my daily walking program.
Q: Can I see you on a map?
A: I have a google map I'm attempting to keep updating located here.
Q: Why only 3.5 miles per day? Wouldn't you be able to walk further than that in a day?
A: Yes, but this is tracking my actual real world walking. Some of the online virtual walks give you a mile for every minute you walk, etc. But that's not actual.
Q: What what retroactive?
A: One of the goals here is to give me something to think about when I'm walking home. If I know the stretch I'm covering that day could be in Arkansas and the temperature there is 70 degrees but I'm really here in Minneapolis at 3 degrees it's a great motivator! So applied all my miles right away. Deal with it.
Q: That doesn't sound like Minnesota Weather!
A: It's not. I'll be taking the temperature and weather conditions for the actual spot on the map. That's how I'll get my "warmer" temperatures walking in the winter. I may break the fiction from time to time to contrast with the actual Minnesota temperature.
